Govind Shrikhande, the Managing Director of the largest departmental store chain in India, with his rich experience of 27 years in the textile, apparel and retail industry, has played a key role in the growth of Shoppers Stop ever since he became a part of it. With sheer passion and strong commitment, he continues to place Shoppers Stop in the limelight steering the company to heights, motivating staff and delivering beyond shareholder expectations.</div>

It was the biggest textile strike when he graduated as a textile technologist in 1982 and the industry had come to a complete hault. Opportunities were dull and the future didn't look bright. Though he was offered a small job at Mafatlal, he chose to do higher studies. After his masters in 1984, he was again offered a job at Mafatlal. It was then that it all started; as a management trainee in marketing at Mafatlal Industries. From thereon, he gathered deep knowledge and expertise in the industry by associating with leading textile and apparel companies and excelling in each of the roles he had handled.</div>

In 1986, he moved to the fabric division of Johnson & Johnson. The next year, he moved to Arvind Mills and spent seven years there. One of the notable roles there was that of being a member of marketing team that created Denim Revolution in India. In 1992, he moved to Bangalore, within the group, as a key resource of the Arrow launch team. He returned to Mumbai after 18 months to be with his family, who didn't want to move out of Mumbai. He worked for Mafatlal Stanrose for a while before joining Bombay Dyeing in 1996. He turned around Vivaldi brand and headed the Retail division there. He worked with Bombay Dyeing till Shoppers Stop scooped him in 2001.</div>

This textile technologist and management graduate started his journey with Shoppers Stop in April 2001 as Vice President of Buying & Merchandising. In 2004 he became the COO and then, the CEO in April 2006. He became the Managing Director of the Company in 2009. He has been instrumental in the growth of the Shoppers Stop. It has doubled the number of stores in the last three years. A quick look at the statistics says that the company has increased its stores from seven in 2001 to 55 in 2012 and its turnover from Rs.200 Crores in 2001 to Rs.2400 Crores in 2012. Under his leadership, the company has launched multiple formats such as Home Stop, Mac, Estee Lauder, Clinique etc. Shoppers Stop along with subsidiaries Crossword Bookstores and Hypercity Retail; and joint venture companies Timezone Entertainment and Nuance Group—operates more than 60.42 lakh square feet in the country today. The numbers says it all!</div>

Shoppers Stop had just declared a major loss of ₹ 24 crores when Govind joined the company. He trusted his gut feelings about the future of retailing in India and hopped in. On the day he joined, a front-page story titled ‘Has India’s biggest retailer failed?’ appeared in The Economic Times. Business Today ran a cover story on similar lines the following week. He and his team worked closely and turned it around in a year. In no time, the company was made profitable and kept opening new stores in batches year after year. Though it went through another loss due to economic slowdown, it quickly aligned itself to the changing needs of the economy and continued to prosper.</div>

In 2005, the company's Initial Public Offering (IPO) was oversubscribed overall by 17.25 times. Next year, the company received Gold Shield Award for excellence in Financial reporting in the category of "Manufacturing & trading Enterprises" by ICAI and acquired 19% stake in Hypercity Retail (India) Ltd. Two years later, in 2008, Shoppers Stop undertook a major Logo and Positioning Evolution initiative which strengthened the brand market positioning, product and service offerings. Since then, there was no looking back. It rose as the undisputed leader in The Bridge To Luxury Category of Department Stores in India. It was during his leadership, Fortune named Shoppers Stop as the No 1 Social Net-worth Brand from India in 2011 and 2012 and also received the “Dun & Bradstreet -Rolta Corporate Awards 2011” and "Leadership Governance Award", in the Service Category at the QIMPRO BEST PRAX CONCLAVE 2012. He has added several feathers to Shoppers Stop since then by winning various prestigious awards such as Most Admired Retail Company by Business World , Emerging Market Retailer by the World Retail Congress, etc.</div>

Over the years under his leadership, the Raheja Corp, the hospitality and real estate players, had its retail chain stores all over the country. What started as a small store in Andheri selling only mens wear in 1992 has become an international shopping destination today with an assortment of the leading international and national brands in clothing for men, women, and kids; accessories, fragrances, cosmetics, footwear; home furnishing and decor products and what not. By 2016, Shoppers Stop operates 83 stores in 38 cities and is still counting. It has come a really long way since 2001 – be it in terms of the number of stores or the multiple formats or the number of loyalty card members.</div>

It is quite interesting to note how Govind is building a culture for great customer service. He himself carries his designation as Customer Care Associate and Managing Director. It percolates down to the very bottom. The store manager is designated the Customer Care Associate and Store Head. The salesperson is again Customer Care Associate. He emphasizes on identifying the talents within the company and nurturing them by giving the right tools to grow better and serving the customer. They have also recently started e-learning services and mobile application services to train their staff at store. His aim is to equip all Customer Care Associates to give the same top level of care and service to all the customers. Infact, isn't service and positive shopping experience at the store the essence of retailing? He sure has his own ways to win the heart of his cutomers.</div>

           It’s serial entrepreneurship that is distinguishing some 
business leaders from the others globally. Admittedly, both will have 
their respective place in history just like they have their place under 
their sun. But one thing is sure – both these types, most often, usher 
in a progressive environment. Through their enterprising activity, they 
not only create products, solutions, or offerings for people to consume,
 but they also set the tone for a chain-reaction. In order to offer what
 they create, they have to source from others – which creates not only 
business for the suppliers but also employment as it does with the 
entrepreneurs themselves who are required to employ thousands of people 
to be able to run their businesses smoothly.<br />
<br />
This then means 
thousands of families are supported financially, which in turn creates 
social stimuli such as development, human capital, etc. In that sense, 
these entrepreneurs can be considered to be the vital cogs in the wheel 
of life.<br />
<br />
<strong>So, what separates entrepreneurs from serial entrepreneurs then?</strong><br />
Hunger?
 Nope – both types have an insatiable hunger for business success. 
Determination, efforts, etc.? It can be safely considered as both the 
types exhibiting these traits in adequate measure.If there’s anything at
 all that sets them apart is perhaps the serial entrepreneur’s constant 
lookout for new business regardless of the vertical – the businesses 
could be innumerable whereas normal entrepreneurs would look to  make it
 really count in the specific area of their business activity.<br />
<br />
<strong>So, Sharad Sharma belongs to the latter group – serial entrepreneurs. </strong><br />
And
 he perhaps is the only Indian serial entrepreneur who has such rich 
experience and across umpteen domains – although the focus has rightly 
been his core area of expertise – information technology. And he has 
also delivered wonderfully well various senior and executive functions 
both within the companies he worked for and the companies he founded or 
co-founded.<br />
<br />
While he is the co-founder and CEO of BrandSigma, he 
is in the hot-seat (so to say) of so many organizations and companies 
where his role is pivotal to the success and functioning of all of those
 entities.<br />
In a career spanning more than three decades, Sharma 
has been there (almost everywhere) and done so much more than probably 
any of his peers or contemporaries might have.<br />
<br />
<strong>Education and early jobs</strong><br />
Sharad
 Sharma had his education from the Delhi – first from Delhi Public 
School (R.K. Puram, New Delhi) and then Bachelor of Engineering Degree 
(Electrical Engineering) from the Delhi College of Engineering which he 
completed in 1986.<br />
<br />
Right after completing his engineering, he 
joined DCM Data Products where he would stay for three years during 
which he was basically into software research & development in the 
capacity of a software engineer.<br />
Then his next calling was Ivy 
Systems where he got elevated to the post of director – he was the 
director of product development.<br />
<br />
<strong>Inching towards management roles…</strong><br />
After
 Ivy Systems, Sharma’s next stint was with the global Lucent 
Technologies where he would work for almost 8 years (just three months 
shy, in fact) – through the course of which he would assumes various 
management positions. It is these stints that helped shaped the 
entrepreneur in him. For example,at DCM he worked on developing UNIX 
server platforms based in i86 architecture andlater at an Apple 
supported start-up where (as one of the early stage employees) he learnt
 how the absence of marketing skills can derail a good product business,
 and then setting up the R&D labs in India for both Lucent as well 
as A&T. So he was almost a finished product himself by the time he 
set his eyes on business activity.<br />
<br />
<strong>The entrepreneurship begins his enterprise…</strong><br />
A
 decade and a half of working with various companies in different 
capacities had helped equip Sharma with the perspective and business 
acumen required to start his own company. Powered by his own skills and 
education and backed by his long professional experience, he co-founded a
 company called Teltier Technologies. He was the Chief Executive Officer
 of the company which was a start-up based of New Jersey and plied its 
trade in the wireless infrastructure eventually becominga the leader 
which lead to its acquisition by Cisco.<br />
<br />
Entrepreneurship had well 
and truly caught up with Sharma by now and he ensured it was made good 
of. But before that he was involved with Symantec (earlier VERITAS) as 
its Indian General Manager as well as Vice President of operations. This
 perhaps came in at the right time as it gave him enough insights into 
the then nascent IT and ITES business and <br />
where it would all go in times to come and where it all stood in his scheme of things.<br />
<br />

His first investment into private equity was for a period of one year 
which gave him enough confidence in this path to becoming a serial 
entrepreneur  - of course, as we have seen, it was not by design.</div>

His
 next investment and the role was as a board director with the then 
start-up called Bharat Matrimony. This association lasted for about a 
year and a half.<br />

His real big leap…</div>

Sharma’s clearly outstanding role that would eventually drive him to 
continue to invest in product development companies, especially in India
 came in the form of his association with the then internet technology 
pioneer, Yahoo! He was the Senior Vice President of Yahoo! While also 
being entrusted with the job of heralding the company’s Indian R&D 
facility as its CEO.<br />
<br />
Yahoo! Was his last job as a direct employee.
 He would thereafter be taking over many crucial and board level roles 
with companies he either co-founded or where he had invested as well as 
those where he played an advisory role as well.<br />
<br />

The decade so far…
In the immediately preceding decade from now, Sharma has been 
directly or indirectly involved with many start-ups and initiatives. 
Beginning from Caanan Partners (Entrepreneur-in-Residence) followed by 
an active role as the executive council member of NASSCOM (where he was 
also the chair of the product forum), then his deep and active 
involvement with the India Angel Network (of which he is a member even 
today), and playing a crucial role in the inception of the non-profit 
initiative called iSPIRT Foundation (Co-Founder and Governing Council 
Member).It is basically a think-tank for the aspiring IT entrepreneurs 
if the country and stands for —the Indian Software Industry Products 
Roundtable. <br />
<br />
<strong>BrandSigma…</strong><br />
He didn’t have to 
actually do anything different to be able to be up there with the 
who-is-who of the Indian IT industry. He was already one of the 
country’s most active angel investors in the technology sector with as 
many as 12 known investments. But, being the technocrat he is, he 
followed his passion for product development and around 2011 he felt the
 need as well as saw the opportunity to found yet another company that 
would provide specific services.<br />
<br />
He called it BrandSigma: As the 
name suggests there would be both marketing as well as quality attached 
to the services of the company.Based of Ney York, it would work in the 
pre-packaged software industry (offering analytics for brand management,
 combining marketing science with large data sets). <br />
<br />
BrandSigma 
Inc. is just another expression of the visionary Sharma where he has 
been able to bring together fantastic talent from the IT industry – 
figure this: It has senior executives, successful entrepreneurs and 
technology leaders from companies like the renowned advertising agency 
Dentsu and semiconductor major Texas Instruments and its Chief Science 
Officer, Abhinanda Sarkar, was with GE Research and IB Research in the 
past (a Stanford PhD and ISI alum)– to name a few.<br />
<br />
When he gets 
some breathing space from BrandSigma (in fact, he doesn’t get, he 
creates some breathing space), he is involved in propelling the product 
development ecosystem in the country. That he does in his capacity as 
the co-founder and as member of the governing council of iSPIRT – which 
itself is has representation from scores of successful names of Indian 
origin from the industry across the globe, who share Sharma’s vision, 
interest, and passion for the technological advancement of the country 
through home-grown talent.<br />

           Big Basket team was earlier set up India's first 
e-commerce site FabMart.com in 1999, and then established the 
Fabmall-Trinethra chain of more than 200 grocery supermarket stores in 
southern India.  They founded BigBasket in December 2011 as an India's 
largest online supermarket with a presence in over 25 cities in India. 
Let’s read the story of the company and the man behind it – Hari Menon! 
Hari Menon was the Cofounder, CEO and Head of Merchandising at 
Bigbasket.com.<br />
<br />
<strong>Childhood and Education</strong><br />
Hari
 was born in 1963. Hari was born into a middle-class family that lived 
in Bandra, Mumbai, and was always taught to lead a live that gave him a 
settled live, a stable job, etc… It was the urge to experiment that 
pushed him to try out something new.<br />
<br />
Hari is an alumnus of BITS 
Pilani and is married to ‘Shanti Menon’ – principal of ‘The Deen’s 
Academy’ (Bangalore). She is also the daughter of ‘E Shreedharan’, the 
man behind the Delhi Metro. Personally, he considers himself to be a 
Music enthusiast, and also wishes to play in a band someday. He is also 
an avid cricket fan and a member of the ‘Karnataka Cricket Association’ 
as well.<br />

<strong>The Spark</strong><br />
Hari Menon, co founder 
and CEO of Big Basket started his career with ORG Systems and worked 
with TVS Electronics, Wipro InfoTech and Integrated Data Systems.  His 
wide exposure in these companies and subsequently in the education &
 training space in Manipal over the last few years has placed Hari in a 
unique position to guide India Skills in making an impactful 
contribution to the skills development sector in India. Before his entry
 into the education sector, Hari co-founded Fabmall - a pioneer in 
internet and grocery retail, wherein he handled a gamut of 
responsibilities including strategic business planning, raising venture 
capital, building organizational capabilities and creating a strong IT 
platform for the retail business. Prior to Fabmall, Hari headed 
Programme Management at Planetasia.com wherein he oversaw large scale 
project deliveries involving a wide team of software developers, 
business analysts, web designers& web writers. Then he co founded 
Bigbasket in December 2011 in Bangalore by a team of five - V S 
Sudhakar, Hari Menon, Vipul Parekh, V S Ramesh and Abhinay Choudhari.<br />

<strong>What Is Big Basket?</strong><br />
Bigbasket
 is  founded and operated by ‘Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt. Ltd.’ It
 has  more than 14000 products and over 1000 brands listed on their 
catalogue – BigBasket is known as the  India’s largest online food and 
grocery store. It offers a wide range of options in every category to 
provide you with the best quality products at the lowest prices which 
include – fresh Rice and Dal, Fruits and Vegetables, Spices and 
Seasonings, Packaged products, Beverages, Personal care products, Meats,
 and many more items.<br />

While, BigBasket is an online based company 
and does not have any brick and mortar stores. It is very simple to 
order as you need to visit bigbasket.com and choose the products you 
wish to purchase then add the items to your Shopping Basket and the Big 
Basket team offer 4 slots per day. Finally chose a convenient payment 
option (Cash, Sodexo, Credit Card)   then products would be delivered to
 your house.<br />

Currently they are widespread across the locations 
like Mumbai, Delhi, Mysore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vijayawada-Guntur, 
Pune, Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, etc...<br />
<br />
<strong>The Growth</strong><br />
It
 all began in 1999. Hari Menon along with five of his friends – VS 
Sudhakar, Vipul Parekh , Abhinay Choudhari  and V S Ramesh launched 
their online retail website called ‘Fabmart’.<br />
<br />
Even though they did
 manage to get some traction but since their idea was way ahead of its 
time, they could not shake the masses. And to worsen the whole deal, the
 dotcom bubble burst happened.<br />
<br />
That is when they decided to put 
the online business on the backseat and focused all the energies on 
‘Fabmall’, their physical retail chain of grocery stores. They also 
merged this chain with another grocery retail chain called – 
‘Trinethra’.<br />
<br />
Anyway, in a matter of seven years, they expanded 
their business to 200 stores across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, 
Karnataka and Kerala. Around the same time, they also decided to 
sell-off the business to Aditya Birla Group.<br />
<br />
That is when they 
thought of getting back to their original idea online grocery store. As 
their discussion deepened with serial entrepreneur Krishnan Ganesh, they
 concluded to go ahead with it. The idea was collectively seeded by 
serial entrepreneurs and angel investors Krishnan and Meena Ganesh. And 
finally in December 2011, they launched BigBasket.com!<br />
<br />
Soon after 
the launch, they also received their first funding of $10 Mn from 
ChrysCapital co-founder Raj Kondur and Ascent Capital. He had earlier 
invested $4 Mn in Fabmart as well.<br />
<br />
According to Hari, the first 
six to nine months were the most challenging ones. Since they had 
already faced the heat once with Fabmart, the pressure was even more. 
The biggest challenge for them was to create and maintain a building 
capacity to meet customer demand.<br />
<br />
This was even more commendable, 
since they were barely advertising about the brand and mainly relied on 
word of mouth. As per their stats, more than 45 % of their customers 
came through references.<br />
<br />
By the next one year, they had already 
expanded to Hyderabad and Mumbai, and were also planning to further 
increase their services in Delhi, Chennai Pune, Ahmedabad and Kolkata as
 well.<br />
<br />
BigBasket also roped in Bollywood actor – ‘Shah Rukh Khan’ 
as their brand ambassador, for an undisclosed sum; following which, they
 also launched a high volume television, digital and print media 
campaign as well.<br />
<br />
<strong>BigBasket Business model</strong><br />
BigBasket
 team along with Hari menon has effectively managed to attain and 
maintain their success by using various strategies which mainly surround
 three important factors:<br />
<ul>
<li>Unmatchable Customer Service (in all aspects)</li>
<li>A large variety of products</li>
<li>An constant innovation using technology</li>
</ul>
Now
 the grocery business in India is mainly divided into two types i.e. 
Planned Purchase and Top-up Purchase. When BigBasket started their 
operations, it adopted the ‘just-in-time model’ – wherein not only 
perishable good but every item was brought against an order. In other 
words, they were purchased-to-order. In this model, the delivery boy 
directly picks up the item from the vendor, and directly delivers it to 
the customer. They still use this model for quite-a-few items like 
Bakery items, Pet food, Small household appliances, etc. which are not 
feasible to store.<br />
<br />
Over the period of time, as their business 
grew, they moved on to an ‘inventory model’ (for most of its products), 
and BigBasket now buys products directly from suppliers like – HUL, 
P&G, farmers, mills, etc and then stocks these in warehouses. 
BigBasket then adds a margin to the purchased price of the product 
before selling them.<br />
<br />
They have a completely automated process of 
initial inventory stocking and post its completion, re-ordering! The 
company uses analytics to predict their weekly demand, with the help of 
which they optimize their logistics and supply volumes to drive better 
margins.<br />
<br />
This ‘Single-point stocking’ greatly helps the company to
 strictly manage the shrinkage and rejection of products, and also helps
 them to invest the saved money in advertising as well.<br />
More 
recently, BigBasket has been seen adopting a hyper local strategy, 
wherein, it has partnered with more than 1,800 neighborhood grocery 
stores across India to deliver goods in under an hour.<br />

Serial entrepreneurs have an uncanny knack of seeing 
success in things others may choose to ignore or perhaps be oblivious 
of. That is why they are on a constant quest to look for opportunities 
that others may not even think as possible. Take for example, Marc Lore,
 the president and Chief Executive Officer of Walmart e-Commerce’s US, 
who has for almost two decades both founded and spun off companies at a 
whopping profit. Each venture that he put his hand on was a success for 
him. Right from the first company that he founded to his recent 
association with America’s biggest retailer Walmart – everything has 
been ever-so-shrewd.</div>

Very few have had that kind of almost 
single-handed success with so many start-ups as Lore has. Starting off 
as a banker and then taking up executive roles at some of the leading 
financial institutions had helped shape his intrinsic fiber that leaned 
heavily toward savings – something that struck a chord with dozens of 
investors all along, who came in heaps to invest in almost every company
 that he founded or co-founded.</div>

That besides there was always 
novelty in what he tried to accomplish – something that adversaries 
seemed to have missed. Take for example his diapers.com for families, 
and wag.com for pet owners. These were simple and unassuming businesses 
that dealt with the day-to-day needs of families.</div>

It is these 
types of initiatives that have caught the eye of investors who saw a lot
 of value unlocking if they invested his ventures.</div>

<strong>Education and early jobs</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lore
 had his education from the Bucknell University as well as The Wharton 
School (University of Pennsylvania). From the Bucknell University he 
earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management/Economics (cum 
laude) while he is currently on leave from the Wharton School of the 
University of Pennsylvania. He is also a CFA Charterholder.</div>

He 
then went on to do a few jobs that not only sharpened his 
entrepreneurial skills but also bestowed him with the much needed 
business perspectives that would serve him well when he became an 
entrepreneur.</div>

The various investment banking positions was with 
Credit Suisse First Boston as the vice-president of the risk management 
division of its emerging markets business and then he headed the risk 
management division of the Sanwa International Bank (London).</div>

<strong> The entrepreneur…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After
 almost half-a-decade or so of working in various banking positions, 
Lore now set about his entrepreneurial journey. He then co-founded The 
Pit Inc.,an Internet market-making collectible company constructed that 
was floated as an alternative to eBay. Lore sold The Pit Inc., to the 
Topps Company in 2001, and what’s more, he also went on to become the 
Chief Operating Officer of one of the Topps Company’s subsidiaries 
called Wizkids, Inc.</div>

After a few years he co-founded his next big 
venture called the company called 1800DIAPERS. The inception of this 
came about through his realization of his own family’s problem of 
keeping baby-care goods in stock. Thus he joined hands with Vinit 
Bharara to start this company that met the needs of such families. They 
would bring few more family-needs oriented companiescalled as soap.com, 
wag.com, act. that they ran under one parent company called Quidsi. In 
no time the duo were successful in building a building a loyal customer 
base for each of these companies. The customers would invariably be 
young couples who found themselves missing a thing or two while managing
 their toddlers, and for whom these were like handy and very convenient.</div>

In
 a period of seven years starting from 2005 when they had started 
diapers.com upto 2012, Lore initiated a spate of measures that would 
help the company gain the competitive edge – mainly through 
cost-savings.In fact, Lore’s measures such as improving the economics of
 shipping bulky and low-margin products like diapers to their customers 
bysetting-up warehouses as close tothe urban areas as possible so as to 
be in a position to take advantage of bare shipping rates besides also 
brought in algorithms to minimize shipping cost, and topped it all by 
conducting warehouse operations using robots (Kiva).</div>

<strong> Competition to Amazon…?</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While
 it might sound a bit stretched to say that a start-up made of assorted 
items specifically for young couples only could challenge the might of a
 global behemoth, the Goliath – Amazon itself was weighing options to 
buy off Quidsi. It could be partly because Quidsi companies may end up 
threatening Amazon’s baby-care business and partly because Lore’s 
companies had succeeded in building up a very good customer base.</div>

So,
 it would appear that Amazon did decide to acquire Quidsi (and of course
 the companies under its stable) after much deliberation as there were 
many aspects to it than just competition and the potential loss of 
revenue. Quidsi brought in a whopping $550 million to Lore and its 
share-holders.</div>

Lore didn’t stop there. Like he had done with the 
sale of The Pit Inc., to the Topps Company, he again assumed a position 
of responsibility at Amazon and stayed there for a couple years.</div>

<strong> Jet, set, go</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As
 is their wont, entrepreneurs are always on the look-out for new 
business opportunities. It is even more prevalent with serial 
entrepreneurs because these guys are an aggressive lot. And so it was 
with Lore. After the Quidsi sale to Amazon was done and dusted and he 
had a peek into the functioning of how the world’s largest online 
retailer worked and of course not before adding so much value to its 
operations, Lore felt it was time for yet another venture.</div>

This 
time he co-founded an e-commerce company called Jet.com. The other 
co-founders were Nate Faust and Mike Hanrahan. Like before, this time 
round as well there was much interest from investors in the venture to 
be floated by Lore and company. The trio raised about $80 million and 
started work on the platform.</div>

The USP of the platform was 
something unheard and unseen of. If its Lore, it could be expected that 
he would come up with something like Jet.com – an e-commerce platform in
 the face of so many others only if he had something up his sleeve that 
was distinct enough to attract customers to its fold.</div>

His plan was
 to compensate or reward customers for word-of-mouth publicity with 
stock options. This wasn’t heard of. Thus a campaign was launched under 
which Jet.com offered stock options to users who generated word-of-mouth
 for the company in advance of launch. It eventually became a shopping 
club with an annual membership fee that would allow members to access 
all products with the lowest prices – and that too on millions of items.
 The membership fee was subsequently taken off (Oct 2015) to retain the 
customer base.</div>

Even as Jet.com was in the process of generating 
the intended interest and bringing in membership and some sales, it had 
done enough to set investors thinking about its potential. As a result, 
Lore was successful in creating a huge valuation for a company that 
hadn’t yet delivered on the scale to be able to command such a 
valuation. So, all one can say it that such high valuation could be 
attributed to the goodwill of the people behind it and the idea they 
wanted to forward. Thus, we can see that it all boiled down to 
brand-Lore to make such valuation possible.</div>

<strong> Walmart e-Commerce U.S. beckoned</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The
 situation was fertile for both Lore and Walmart. The retail giant had 
been struggling for some time to make it really count offline as well 
having missed the early days of the e-commerce when it would have given 
it a level-playing field with the others such as Amazon and eBay. But, 
having missed that phase and now finding itself in a situation where it 
was increasingly threatened by the online players, which had begun to 
make a dent into its topline, Walmart was looking to add some net-savvy 
force behind its e-commerce platform.</div>

Who better than Marc Lore 
could drive that forward? And yet again, for a straight third-time, Lore
 was able to successfully sell one of his companies to a bigger giant 
and take on a position of responsibility.</div>

Walmart bought Jet.com 
for a whopping $3 Billion and also made a deal which would see Lore 
assuming the leadership of the company’s e-Commerce US operations and 
make it good.</div>

Lore and Doug McMillon – the CEO of Walmart – had 
deep discussions as how to revamp the online presence of the company and
 make it count. They have already set in motion many plans under the 
guidance and leadership of the proven visionary, Marc Lore.</div>

Marc 
Lore has always tasted success with everything that he has done or was 
involved in. Will he be successful yet again? Well one cannot really say
 as this time round he is pitted against none other than Jeff Bezos – an
 equally enterprising and proven visionary. While it may not actually be
 a Goliath Vs David but Marc Lore and Walmart are really up against it.</div>

his primary education – like most village-folk do – from the only school
 in his village. Then, being the bright student he was, time was ripe 
for him to pursue higher education. Accordingly, he stepped out of the 
cozy and serene environs of his village to enroll into the Andhra 
University for a B. Pharmacy. He wasn’t satisfied still with that degree
 so he followed it up with a Master’s in Technology degree in 
Biotechnology from the same university. His success at every stage of 
his educational life encouraged the young and aspiring to be a scientist
 to also explore his postdoctoral studies, which he managed to acquire 
from the Stanford University in the US.</div>

<strong> The prelude to the spark</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Like
 it happens with most students belonging to modest families in India, 
Dr. Gedela also faced many challenges through the course of his higher 
education. Of the many that he had to confront, the biggest one was the 
access or the lack of it to educational journals. He didn’t have a lot 
of money with which to pay for accessing scientific material to support 
his post-doctoral thesis (research paper).</div>

The struggle was so 
immense that it left a bitter taste in his mouth forever. While he would
 weather the storm commendably by doing everything in his power, riding 
the extreme wealth of will-power he had, Dr. Gedela went on to complete 
his education. Along the way he would present his research work on the 
subject “Proteomics” at an international conference held in Seoul, South
 Korea, at the Human Proteome Organization.</div>

received and much appreciated. Importantly, his work got the ultimate 
approval from the scientific community at the conference when he was 
awarded with the “Young Scientist Award.”</div>

<strong> The Spark</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While
 his work being recognized was an elevating experience for the young 
Indian, it was also humbling in a way because only he knew the pains and
 travails he had had to go through to work on the paper and get the 
desired output. He was also mindful of the fact that not many would come
 trumps like he did – in fact not may would even go as far as attempting
 such research work owing to the extreme lack of access to scientific 
material – largely owing to the monetary aspect of it. He felt perhaps 
it would have relatively easier and even better if he had had open 
access to all the stuff he wanted to sift through to be able to make his
 point as well as substantiate it.</div>

That is when it resolved that 
not long after he would start an initiative – a publication to be 
specific – that would publish scientific material and make it accessible
 for free. Thus began the quest for making OMICS a reality.</div>

Dr.
 Gedela founded OMICS in 2007 with the sole objective of helping fellow 
scientists overcome their difficulties in accessing information and 
knowledge through and hence started it as an open access publication.</div>

 for the name of the organization, word goes that OMICS was derived from

in-person interaction as well as exchange of ideas which is the very

seminars, and workshops across the globe it would invite eminent 
personalities from both the scientific community as well as some 
business leaders well to communicate the powers of science through 
meaningful interaction and discussions where leading scientists from 
around the world deliberate their knowledge with young and aspiring 
scientists.</div>

This area received so much interest from like-minded 
people that today OMICS under the guidance and leadership of Dr. 
Srinubabu Gedela organizes about 1000 such conferences, conventions, and
 fairs, every year across the globe (across USA, Europe and Asia with 
the support from more than 1000 scientific societies) – no mean 
achievement.</div>

Today OMICS and its associate companies are present 
in 5 countries with about 2000 employees working to not only sustain the

under which somewhere about 50,000 scientific research articles are 
published annually.</div>

 making deadly sure that no aspiring science student finds himself in 
the predicament that Dr. Gedela had to face during his academic years by
 founding the world’s leading publishing house for free online science 
and knowledge journals through OMICS and its affiliates across five 
countries, Dr. Gedela has turned his attention also towards making his 
vision truly sustainable.</div>

The modus operandi being acting as a 
venture capitalist. As part of which, it is said, he will fund and 
support projects that have the capacity to generate self-employment 
among youth. He also turned as a film producer with his production house

entertainers such as ‘Chandee’ ‘Aata Arambham’ & ‘Veerudokkade’ are 
noteworthy – movies which mostly dwell on social, family, and women 
empowerment issues.</div>

We now know why he is not akin to any regular 
entrepreneur as vindicated by his VC activity – not to make money for 
himself or the fund but for the benefit of other commoners like him who 
would not only benefit through self-employment but also through his 
publications which paved the way for a different kind of employment such
 as executives, coordinators, presenters, translators, editors, and 
freelancers for the scores of publications under the umbrella of OMICS.</div>

The
 entrepreneurship of Dr. Gedela completes the full circle with his 
social development activities as he also promotes schools, 
healthcare,safe drinking water, and sanitation in villages of the 
country – an activity he has been involved in for the last seven years. 
In fact, he adopted 7 villages including his home Allenna with Burja, 
Kilentra, G B Puram and its nearby villages being the other in the much 
impoverished Srikakulam District of Andhra Pradesh.</div>

As part of the
 strengthening the education infrastructure of these under-attended 
villages, Dr. Gedela initiated the “OMICS Educational Society” which 
sets the curriculum, trains the human resources, provides technical 
assistance and works on capacity building through faculty development 
workshops to the teacher and taught in schools that are already 
functioning at various levels. The pedagogy in these schools is 
well-complemented by audio-visual teaching learning equipment.</div>
