The palace is the brainchild of Hong Kong jewellery manufacturer Lam Sai-wing. He says he wanted to correct people’s misconception of the Chinese idiom “treasuring A-Jiao in the gold palace”.
“This ‘Treasuring A-Jiao in the Gold Palace’ represents man’s loyalty in love to his wife. It doesn’t mean keeping a mistress in another home, like what people nowadays mean. So I built this gold palace to correct the misunderstanding.”

A 50-million US dollar gold palace opened its doors to the Hong Kong public.
Crowds gathered round the entrance to the 7,000 square foot Swisshorn Gold Palace, built with 2.5 tonnes of pure gold.
The palace is the brainchild of Hong Kong jewellery manufacturer Lam Sai-wing.
Lam's idea was inspired by the unfulfilled promise of a Han Emperor, who pledged to build a gold palace for his wife A-Jiao.
He says he wanted to correct people's misconception of the Chinese idiom "treasuring A-Jiao in the gold palace".

"This 'Treasuring A-Jiao in the Gold Palace' represents man's loyalty in love to his wife. It doesn't mean keeping a mistress in another home, like what people nowadays mean. So I built this gold palace to correct the misunderstanding."
Every piece of furniture inside the palace - including the sofas and king-size bed - is made of pure gold.

Its 5-million dollar gold toilet is already a tourist attraction.
Guests can stay overnight for a fee of 25,000 US dollars.
