This man’s career could well go down as one of the most 
complete professional sagas of our times, if not all time. Simply put, 
Arun Kumar, the Chairman and CEO of KPMG in India, has traversed an 
entrepreneurial and professional journey like very few in the history of
 the modern world have. He started off at what could probably be termed 
as the best grooming ground for Indian executives – the Tata 
Administrative Services (TAS) right after graduation from the Kerala 
University. The half-decade spent at the country’s leading conglomerate 
not only taught him the nitty-gritty of the Indian industry but also 
introduced him to a world beyond the seas which was as yet unexplored by
 most of the country’s aspiring young talents.</div>

So he left for the 
United States in 1978 to pursue a course in business management from the
 world renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - Sloan 
School of Management in 1980 – where he realized his potential to be an 
entrepreneur. From then on it was a spate of founding companies and 
succeeding in the early days of the computer revolution which were 
followed by a very long first stint at one of the world’s leading 
professional services company – KPMG. Through the course of his almost 
two decades he assumed responsibility of many positions and delivered in
 each of them before finally a role with the Obama administration 
(yes!!) beckoned and he, like everywhere else before, delivered and 
delivered how?</div>

<strong>Education & Life at TAS…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Arun
 Kumar did his schooling from the Lawrence School, Lovedale (Kerala) 
through the early-to-mid 1960s. Then he did he completed his Bachelor of
 Science Degree (Physics) from University College, University of Kerala,
 Trivandrum in 1972. That he had leadership qualities was evident from 
the activities he was involved in since his college days where he 
co-founded the Science Society of Trivandrum.</div>

Right after 
graduation he joined the Tata Administrative Services (TAS) where he got
 selected into the central management cadre of the Tata group – then, as
 well as now, one of the leading business houses of the country.</div>

This
 allowed him to gain much perspective in the company’s subsidiary 
business such as auto, steel, exports, and beverages. In fact, he also 
got introduced to the future chairman of the group Ratan Tata under whom
 Arun worked at Nelco – the electronics subsidiary of the group.</div>

This
 was quite an engagement for the young Arun Kumar as it allowed him 
assist Ratan Tata while working on various assignments encompassing 
duties such as new product introductions, management development 
activities and government relations.</div>

<strong> To the United States…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The
 learning curve had come to its saturation point at TAS. Arun Kumar was 
looking for new frontiers. So it was decided that he would have to 
pursue his ambitions through the pedestal of much industrial and 
entrepreneurial revolution of the world in the 19th& 20th centuries –
 the United States.</div>

The best way to succeed in the land of dream 
as most considered was to equip oneself with the right education and 
knowledge before setting foot on the path to the ever-enterprising 
journey of entrepreneurship. Thus, he packed his bags and off he went to
 the US in 1978 to pursue a management degree from the Sloan School Of 
Management at MIT. Even at the MIT he continued with activities that he 
had undertaken as a student at the University of Kerala. He was 
President of Sangam – the India Association of MIT</div>

He joined Elxsi
 – the venture-funded mini-computer company in 1980 after finishing his 
MBA.As controller of the company he led the finance and administration 
departments and established the MRP process as well as the ERP 
infrastructure of the company besides working with many investment 
bankers on major placements.</div>

<strong>Entrepreneur express himself…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After
 working for more than 3 years at Elxsi, he then shifted gears to 
co-found a company called Cydrome Inc. in 1984. The Milpitas-based 
company was a pioneer in the mini-supercomputer segment and Arun besides
 being the Co-Founder and member of the board of its directors, also 
assumed additional responsibilities as its CFO and VP operations. This 
was a very crucial phase in the career of Arun Kumar as he went about 
making it the success the co-founders had envisioned it to be, by 
establishing and managing financial processes, manufacturing operations,
 and the all-important, MIS.</div>

With such kind of effort put in 
through the close to five years it had been under the leadership of Arun
 Kumar and the other co-founders, it was bound to attract the attention 
of technology leaders and, accordingly, it was acquired by 
Hewlett-Packard which rechristened it as PA-RISC Architecture.</div>

Arun
 Kumar next milestone was to the brief (14 months) stint as director of 
planning and management information of the workstations and servers 
company based of Mountain View called Silicon Graphics.</div>

The next 6
 years or so were the perfect prelude to his long KPMG association. He 
took up a couple of external responsibilities such as the Vice President
 and CFO of Elite Microelectronics Inc. which dealt in fabless 
semiconductors (for which he established sourcing and distribution 
arrangements from Japan and Taiwan)as well as that of Netlabs Inc. the 
network management software company, Netlabs Inc., (involved in 
financing, strategic alliances, and ops) and followed these two brief 
stints by setting up yet another company called Planning and Logic Inc. 
in 1993. This new company was a pioneer in creating planning and 
logistics software applications and was merged with another company of 
similar profile in a couple years since its inception.</div>

<strong>KPMG…1</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After
 successfully working and delivering for other companies in various 
capacities as well as himself successfully launching and selling off two
 companies, time was ripe for yet another change for Arun Kumar.</div>

But
 this was to be the most long-lasting as well as perhaps the most 
satisfying as well as enriching experiences ever that Kumar would have.</div>

He
 joined KPMG in the July of 1995 and ever since right upto his alignment
 with the government of USA under the then President, Barack Obama, he 
has never looked back. His success is defined more in how he has helped 
shape so much good around through the various capacities he took up with
 the global consulting leader rather than his own growth.</div>

<strong>The Whitehouse beckoned…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Arun Kumar
 had spent 18 long years of his life at KPMG assuming very high profile 
responsibilities and doing well. Thus when President Obama and Co., were
 looking for an experienced hand to help them with their global export 
and inward investment promotion efforts, they didn’t have to look 
further than Arun Kumar. The choice was very simple – the man had such 
credentials as very few others had besides of course his international 
experience of working with scores of clients and heling them realize 
true value for their businesses, made it a no-brainer for the people 
that be, including President Obama, to zero-in on Arun Kumar for the 
role of Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Director General of the US 
Commercial Service.</div>

In this inherently constricting kind of a role
 (intrinsic to any state organization) also, Arun Kumar was exemplary as
 he lead the official advocating for better market access for U.S. 
exporters. That besides, he also worked as the Chief executive of the 
U.S. Commercial Service with offices in 78 countries and over 100 U.S. 
cities across all 50 states of the US and served with distinction along 
with a workforce of over 1600 professionals.</div>

In fact, it is to 
Arun Kumar’s credit that commercial ties between India and the United 
States have strengthened as he played a key role in establishing the 
India-US Strategic & Commercial Dialogue besides helping renew the 
India-US CEO Forum. President Obama and his team could not have done any
 better with their selection of the candidate for this very crucial 
engagement.</div>

In February 2017, the 
Board of KPMG India (Arun was a lead partner of the India practice) and 
its partners ratified the selection of Arun Kumar as its Chairman & 
CEO for a term of five years. The fact that he beat 2-3 serious 
contenders from within the company speaks volumes of the trust the board
 has in his capabilities to carry forward the firms operations to well 
beyond the success it has already had in the emerging landscape of 
globalization and technology-enabled business transformation.</div>

From being a lonely teenager forced to subsist on just a 
loaf of bread and peanut butter though a whole week and chances looking 
forever bleak of a revival in fortunes, Rick Goings, the super 
successful and highly philanthropic CEO of Tupperware Brands 
Corporation, had everything to gain and nothing to lose when a 
serendipitous interaction helped change his life-forever. It changed his
 outlook toward life, opened his eyes to a small yet fruitful window of 
opportunity that he never imagined existed. Such is the beauty of life 
and its vagaries that when you have your backs against the wall and 
everything is seemingly lost, there could still be that slice of luck 
knocking your door that you need to grab hold of and work hard to make 
good of it.</div>

Just like Rick Goings did!!</div>

<strong>The Spark</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Teenage
 could be passing off simply as a waft for some but not for Rick Goings.
 He was forced by family circumstances to live out of home – all on his 
own. It was during this period of relative struggle that Goings found 
the spark that would lead him the direction of a successful life. 
Although it didn’t exactly set everything flying but it definitely 
allowed him to find his bearings and move in every step of life with the
 required zeal and confidence.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The spark came from an unlikely 
source. Out of home at 17 meant Goings had to slog it out to make ends 
meet. Accordingly, he quit school and started out with door-to-door 
selling – he carried Grolier Society Encyclopedias around the Wheaton 
and other Chicago suburbs. During one such visit he met a couple and 
showed them fare he had brought along. However, like all of his attempts
 to converting a meeting into a sale, this one too failed to register a 
sale. But, one thing that was vastly different was that although the 
couple didn’t buy, they were kind of nice to him. The interaction, brief
 though it was, helped Goings to know a little more about the husband. 
The husband worked in the navy and seemed to be doing well (owned a 
house, etc.).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The nature of the husband’s job made sense to Goings
 who had up till then never given it a thought. But now equipped with 
evidence of what it can do, he quit selling encyclopedias and went to 
Navy Pier at Lake Michigan and got himself enlisted. Goings was in 
training three months later. Joining the navy would prove to be the 
game-changer for him as it, primarily allowed him to stay afloat under 
trying circumstances and then also showed him the way to keep working at
 it and succeed even. He acquired leadership skills as well (learned to 
be a leader for the first time in his life after he became the platoon 
leader of his crew after a successful test) which have not only helped 
him prosper but also have made him held out so many others though his 
long and rewarding journey as a business leader.</div>

<strong> College, early entrepreneurship, and into the top roles…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After
 his much rewarding stint with the navy through the course of which he 
also had the experience of working overseas, he joined college but it 
didn’t sustain his interest enough to make him stay the course. So, he 
quit college mid-way and along with a bunch of friends founded a 
distributorship that did direct sales of home fire alarm systems - the 
product "Pyro Sentinel Heat Detection System" direct sales was the first
 of its kind in the US.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since fire safety alarms weren’t common 
back then, it took off well and became a success. But, he had to split 
the partnership with his friends and start a new company called 
Dynamics, Inc. in Charlottesville (VA) that dealt with smoke detectors. 
This was a success too and it continued to give him all that he had 
hoped for in life.</div>

From owning a business and making it so 
successful that he could sell it off (yes he did, as by now there had 
grown enough competition and he couldn’t let the opportunity to make 
good slip by) and move to pursue other things.</div>

And so he did. His 
sales experience, his global exposure, and success as a businessman all 
conjured up to give him a senior position at Avon – the then leader in 
the US market. In the seven years at Avon he held several top positions 
including president of Avon Germany, group vice president & senior 
operating officer for the Pacific Rim, and president of Avon USA.</div>

<strong>Tupperware saga…under Goings</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Although
 Tupperware was established in 1946 it was nowhere near the global 
lifestyle solutions and beauty products company it has become today. And
 almost all of it could be attributed to the single-minded focus of Rick
 Goings, whose leadership has enabled the company to thrive with a 
multi-billion dollar portfolio and global scale of the corporation - 
much of that growth coming from emerging markets something that Goings 
focused on right after he took over when he stressed on branching out to
 Latin America and Asia.  Now almost 95% of its revenues come from 
outside the US – all pivoted around Goings’ contemporizing the company’s
 entire business model, including product lines, party selling system, 
and compensation and recruiting approaches.</div>

By the time Goings 
joined Tupperware in 1992 he was well and truly into the social aspect 
of entrepreneurship. The philanthropist in him had been knocking the 
doors ever since he succeeded with his business. But, now was the time 
to help that takes shape.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
That he was damn serious about it is 
evident from the fact that he put a precondition for taking over the 
reins of Tupperware as its CEO only if the company focused on two very 
specific things as part of its charitable involvement:  women’s issues 
and Boys & Girls Clubs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, there would be no 
charitable cause run if the business was not profitable enough as he 
puts it “philanthropy and profitability are complimentary.” Therefore 
one of the foremost things he did was to realign the company’s 
operations presence from a primarily US-centric to that of a global one.
 One of the reasons for him to lay emphasis on the overseas market was 
the increasing difficulty of direct sales models in the US. Thus the 
“Tupperware home party social networking” that was a proven success in 
the US in early decades of the company’s inception, repeated it with 
such popularity that within just four years since the measures were 
taken by Goings, the company’s overseas revenues grew to a whopping $1 
billion, a fact that led to the company being spun-off from the parent 
company (the new entity retaining Goings as the CEO).</div>

Today, 
Tupperware has a 3.1 million strong global sales force that has clocked 
revenues of $2.2 billion in 2016 and, along the way, enabling the 
company to feature on the Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” 
list.</div>

The life of Bill McDermott, the American CEO of the German
 company, SAP SE (the world’s leading ERP company for which he currently
 lives in Germany because he says "It’s significant symbolically for me 
to have a residence in Germany."), has traversed through so many 
interesting twists and turns that it is worthy of being documented 
through an inspiring book. If we commoners can gauge that, can’t he 
himself do? Of course he did and released a book called “Winners Dream: A
 Journey from Corner Store to Corner Office”with which he hopesthat his 
story will not just inspire other hard-working youths, but show them how
 to do the same.The man’s entrepreneurial spirit shines through even in 
publishing this book which he himself call a part memoir and part 
business strategy.</div>

Thus, it perhaps would be futile for the likes 
of us to try and chronicle the various stages of his life that was and 
still is packed with love, hardship, setbacks, and success.</div>

But, we can surely put forth (briefly)some aspects that can be considered as highlights of his life.</div>

<strong>Education…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
McDermott
 has a bachelor’s degree from Dowling College and a Master’s Degree in 
Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at 
Northwestern University.</div>

<strong> Entrepreneur all the way…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being
 born into a working class family (whose patriarch’s was the great 
baseball player Bobby McDermott) meant that Bill had to take life by the
 scruff of its neck in that he never let an opportunity pass by  without
 putting his best to get the most out of it. You had to do all that and 
much more if you happen to dwell in a house that was so rickety that the
 floor seemed to flood every time it rained, and many more such 
adversities. It was the harsh reality of life that dawned upon young 
Bill that one had to slog it out, persevere, and top it with a bit 
wisdom as indeed courage to be able to make good of it. So it was that 
he went on to do a handful of odd jobs during his schooling and the 
money he thus earned was put to good  use- meet his college expenses (at
 least until Dowling College). In all of this, what is most noticeable 
is his enterprising spirit even at the age of 11 years when he started 
of his paper route business and scaled it into a successful 
multi-product enterprise that included newspapers, greeting cards, 
cookies, etc.) – do you see some cross-sell / up-sell there?</div>

Anyway
 this was not only enough to subsist but also to meet the tuition 
expenses. But of his early ventures, it was the delicatessen business 
that he ended up owning when he was barely 16 that stands out as the 
testimony to visionary entrepreneur the world would see in later years. 
 It wasn’t planned – there was no room for choice of a type of job that 
one could choose under those circumstances during his childhood – you 
had to make do with whatever was presented to you. He happened to secure
 a job in a neighbourhood deli (Country Deli), and not long after that 
he was offered by the owners to take-over the company in lieu of $7000 
(in promissory notes). It was this deli that is said to have paid for 
most of the expenses throughout his academic life.</div>

<strong>Into the big league…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Right
 after graduating out it wasn’t a piece of cake for him to secure a job.
 Circumstances were such that he had to even wait in a block-and-a-half 
long queue of job-seekers to get a job that paid him $2.35 an hour. 
After such short stints at 3 or 4 small companies, he got the big break 
of his life when he got a sales job at Xerox after convincing the 
manager the same day that he was interviewed.</div>

This association was
 to last for a long duration of 17 years during the course of which he 
had both success and adversities that he had to face such as get 
promoted to be only dealt a pay-cut (such were the times), then when 
entrusted with the responsibility of over-turning the worst-performing 
district of the company (in Puerto Rico) moving there along with his 
family to a location that was beset with sand fleas. But he weathered it
 all and turned it into best performing district and eventually (by the 
end of his 17 years at Xerox), he was the youngest corporate officer and
 division president in Xerox’s history.</div>

His experience in a 
largely sales role at Xerox and his subsequent stints at Gartner and 
Siebel Systems made him understand and respect that number one truth in a
 pro’s life: Work hard. That as well as treating all the people in one’s
 life with love and respect, keeping a positive attitude no matter what 
life throws at you, etc. were the learnings he got from working at these
 global companies.</div>

<strong>SAP journey so far….</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He 
joined SAP in 2002 after the company approached him to helm its North 
American business which back then was struggling. But he knew too well 
what he was getting into as just prior to that he was working for Siebel
 – a direct competitor of SAP. Apart from perhaps the realization that 
most of the German staff who were entrusted to look after the North 
American business for the company had failed and, therefore, somebody 
local – an American- might just be able to turn it around for them in 
America, it was the fact that Bill had worked in Siebel that may have 
prompted SAP to approach him.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
So he was made the CEO of SAP, North
 America. As soon as he assumed the responsibility, Bill got down to 
some serious business – change in approach, change in gears. He changed 
the mindset of the salesforce that hovered around engineering (how SAP 
is built) to laying more emphasis on the needs of the customers. Then 
another major shift in business strategy was to move beyond (and not 
away) from the predominantly finance-centered side of SAP which seemed 
to Bill as focusing more on costs instead of growth.  His success 
prompted the company to elevate him to be the co-CEO of SAP (global) – 
partnering a Dane by the name Jim Hagemann Snabe.</div>

This duo 
envisioned one of the most revolutionary things to come out of – SAP 
HANA – the platform enabling in-memory computing. They didn’t just stop 
there: SAP was heralded into the new age business comprising mobile 
devices and cloud computing.</div>

He was instrumental in driving home 
the philosophy as indeed the practice of SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) 
being a long term goal than a short-term objective. It didn’t require 
Bill much convincing to do with the board as one of the co-founders 
(Hasso Plattner, Chairman of the board of directors) believed in this 
philosophy and made sure Bill’s efforts to herald long-term growth were 
not impeded by anything.</div>

And that is how Bill McDermott is helming
 SAP SE – the company employing about 80000 people, serving about 
2,35,000 clients and a revenue of $21 billion.</div>

<strong>Never say never…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Haven’t
 we heard it a zillion times as to how when the going gets tough, the 
tough get going? That is manifested beautifully in the life of 
McDermott. If you thought the struggles of his family during his 
childhood when things weren’t hopeless but were certainly very 
challenging and his coming out of it was in line with the saying (above)
 – hold on: It manifested yet again much later in his life when he is at
 the zenith of his professional career. This he did by way of overcoming
 the loss of an eye (his left one owing to a freak accident at his 
brother’s house) that almost threatened to derail his wonderful journey 
of leadership, success, vision, perseverance, and hard-work that 
conjured up a very inspiring entrepreneurial pursuit and rose from this 
apparently bloody blow – all the more determined and enriched (for he 
says it taught him a great lesson of life) -to be back to work, up and 
running within no time.</div>

Being the scion of an erudite family can sometimes be very
 daunting to live with and even live up to. Not so much for John N. 
Little, who co-founded a company, The MathWorks, whose flagship product 
is MATLAB which is known to be used by about a million scientists across
 the globe - to be able to do what they want to do really well 
(innovations, discoveries, solutions, etc.). If you are wondering why 
something that has such an astonishing following and endorsement by some
 of the most brilliant minds on the planet does not have enough told 
about it in the world, then here’s why: simply because when it was 
conceived and developed by Cleve Moler (Co-authored by John Little) – 
the idea wasn’t to create a mass product.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
If anything, it was the 
result of a super-genius’(Moler) quest to put to use his knowledge and 
express it to the community or audience that is likely to make the most 
out of it. That audience being, primarily, scientists and students (in 
later years), it didn’t warrant any PR activity at all. Word-of-mouth 
and the credibility of the co-founders did it for them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Both of 
the founders have, till date, (barring the brief period when Moler had 
to work else as The MathWorks was too small to afford his pay, but he 
continued to support them during this phase, nonetheless) lived and 
breathed each day of their lives with The MathWorks.</div>

If it was the
 ingenuity of Moler, the mathematics champ, then it surely was the 
enterprising self of Little that actually made MATLAB what it is today, a
 fact vindicated by Moler himself when he said “‘I am the father of 
MatLab, but Jack Little is the father of The MathWorks. He is the spirit
 and the brains behind the company. Little had academic training as a 
control engineer at MIT and Stanford so he knew the applications of 
matrices to control theory, which is still one of the main parts of our 
business – and I didn’t know anything about it. When the PC came out in 
1982, Little figured that it could be used for technical computing. It 
was Little who started the company.”</div>

So, what started with just 
the two MIT grads in the early ‘80s, has now become an organization that
 not only commands much respect from some of the most ignited minds on 
this planet (adopted by more than a million users, 5,000 universities 
and colleges., but also has been able to become and stay commercially 
viable as well as sustainable. The company today has around 3000+ 
employees working for it and it clocked revenues of close to a $billion 
 (App. $893 M).</div>

All this couldn’t have been possible, as Moler himself expressed, with the wonderful thorough-bred Jack Little.</div>

<strong>Family & Education and early sparks</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jack
 Little is the son of renowned MIT (Massachusetts Institute of 
Technology) professor, John D.C. Little, who is best known for Little’s 
Law – an operations research approach that he propounded. In fact, 
Jack’s father is also known to have earned the first Ph.D. in operations
 that was ever awarded in 1955. Not only that he is the founder of the 
concept called ‘Marketing Science’ which he put forth based on his study
 of humans and their buying behavior, besides starting a couple of 
companies.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is only natural that with such an upbringing one 
would expect children in such environs to either grow sick of what the 
seniors do or like in the case of Jack, pick up inspiration from them 
and chart a path of success for themselves in due course. And so it was 
that, Jack Little completed his bachelor’s in electrical engineering 
from, where else, but the MIT from 1974-78 and then, as if that was not 
enough, he further went on to do his M.S. (Electrical Engineering) from 
the hot-bed of many great possibilities and that has so given many 
entrepreneurs of the modern world, Stanford University, which he did 
from 1978 - 1980.</div>

<strong> Serendipitous Rendezvous…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Around
 the time he graduated from Stanford, a chance meeting with yet another 
of his ilk, Cleve Moler, determined the path for Jack for the rest of 
his life. Given that both were learned men with exemplary educational 
backgrounds, the two got along well and mostly delved into math and its 
application in science. It was their keen study of life in general and 
the life and work style of scientists and engineer that helped them in 
recognizing the need among this specific group of people for more 
powerful and productive computation environments beyond those provided 
by languages such as Fortran and C and, further, in putting to use their
 own expertise and experience in maths, computer science, and 
engineering, for developing a high-performance technical computing 
environment that they would call MATLAB (Short for Matrix Laboratory).</div>

While
 Moler did the ground-work on the most effective application of matrices
 in scientific work – that was crux of the dev environment (MATLAB), 
Jack helped give it the much needed demand and utility angle propelled 
by the fact that MATLAB combines comprehensive math and graphics 
functions with a powerful high-level language.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The two men 
respected the fact that while their skills-set were distinct their 
capabilities were complementary. And it was this deep understanding of 
each other and their combined belief in the product / solution they had 
together built for better use, which has led to them being still at the 
company they co-founded more than three-and-a-half decades ago.</div>

<strong>Modus Operandi…to begin with</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Moler
 had developed MatLab but it took flight after he joined hands with 
Jack. Moler’s objective in creating MatLab was simple – to enable 
students to use the LINPACK and EISPACK math libraries without having to
 write FORTRAN programs. Being the shrewd and visionary man he was, when
 Jack reckonedit is a powerful software with the potential to enable 
engineering, scientific, and technical applications on personal 
computers (which also happened to come around in 1982). Thus with that 
spurring the duo into putting together many such aspects, backed by 
their experience, they further developed it so that it can very 
effective. They worked on it for about 3 years after setting up The 
MathWorks in Boston (MA) around 1982. Once they were sure that it was 
ready to be used, whom did they sell it to?</div>

You probably would 
have guessed that since it is a platform/solution aimed at scientists 
and engineers and since who better than an institution that has 
historically been one of the most fertile places for innovation, MIT 
which was also in the vicinity of the company (Cambridge, MA). If you 
did then you were bang on.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
MIT was the company’s first customer to
 buy 10 copies of MatLab in 1985 and thus began the saga of great 
word-of-mouth publicity – the best and most credible form of marketing 
you can get for your offerings – and it was soon getting adopted by 
hundreds and thousands of scientists, engineers, and students across the
 globe it realizing their own potential to create great things – with 
the help of MATLAB.</div>

<strong>Growth and stability…</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That
 Jack and team had built something absolutely critical for the scientist
 fraternity was beyond any doubt. With that sense of satisfaction, Jack 
continued to make the company scale, attract the best talent, create 
further products and solutions, and generally stick on to the original 
purpose with which it was started (the guiding principle being that they
 reckon, feel, and dissipate the importance of maths as the cornerstone 
of all sciences) – all without going cut-throat commercial.</div>

In 
fact, for all we know, it was MIT’s initial purchase of MATLAB and 
Jack’s as well as the company’s association with MIT that has lasted for

Since MATLAB was 
intended at researchers, innovators, scientists, and students, Jack took
 a very bold decision of providing it to students for a subsidized price
 – which initially was resisted and feared by many as a potentially 
counter-productive move, as it could lead to piracy and opportunity cost
 besides, of course, denting into the confidence of regular licensed 
users who would feel kind of robbed. But, Jack was right in this case 
too, like he was always from the beginning, which was proven by the fact
 that the user community in general did let that happen as it ensured 
they used it responsibly. Hats-off to Jack’s vision of ensuring greater 
adoption as well as retaining the faith of existing users.</div>

தொழில் நடத்துவது தொடர்பான ஒரு புதிய உலகம் எனக்காக கதவைத் திறந்தது. எனது சக நிறுவனர்கள் மற்றும் வழிகாட்டிகளிடமிருந்து மகத்தான விஷயங்களைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன். எங்கள் புதிய தொழிலுக்கு வெளியில் இருந்து எந்த முதலீடும் பெறக் கூடாது என்பதில் நாங்கள் உறுதியாக இருந்தோம். அதிகப் பணம் சேகரிக்க, ஒரு பகுதி நேர விற்பனையாளராக நிறையத் தொழில்களைப் பார்த்தேன். <br />

தோல்வி வாழ்க்கையின் ஒரு அங்கம் (ஆரம்பத் தோல்வி எனது தோல்வி அல்ல)<br />
<br />
தோல்வியில் இருந்து நீங்கள் கற்றுக் கொள்கிறீர்கள். உங்களை மேம்படுத்திக் கொள்கிறீர்கள். எனவே தோல்வி அடைவதில் ஒன்றும் தவறில்லை. முதன் முதலாகத் தொழிலைத் தொடங்கிய போது எனது பணத்தையும் நேரத்தையும் இழந்த பிறகும் தொழில் முனைவை நான் விட்டு விடவில்லை. <br />
<br />
மற்றொரு தொழிலில் ஒரு சக நிறுவனராக இணைந்தேன். பொருள் தயார், மார்க்கெட்டிங் உரிமையாளர் நான்தான். முதலீட்டாளர்கள் பார்க்க விரும்பும் இலக்குகளை அடைந்தோம். முதலீடுகளுக்குத் தயாரானோம். <br />
<br />
நாங்கள் அற்புதமான வழிகாட்டிகளையும் முதலீட்டாளர் தொடர்பையும் பெற்றிருந்தோம். எங்கள் தயாரிப்பு, தொழிலை நிர்வகிக்கும் திறன் மற்றும் எங்கள் குழு முதலீட்டாளர்களைக் கவர்ந்தது. ஆனாலும் எங்களால் பணம் திரட்ட முடியவில்லை. ஏன்? ஏனென்றால் முதலீட்டாளர்கள் விரும்புமாறு எங்கள் பொருட்களை மாற்ற நாங்கள் விரும்பவில்லை. <br />
<br />
முதலீட்டளார்களைப் பொருத்தவரையில் அது சரிதான். பணம் அவர்களுடையதாயிற்றே. எங்கள் முடிவும் சரிதான். பொருள் எங்களுடையதல்லவா? இந்த இழுபறியில் ஒப்பந்தம் ஏற்பட வழியில்லாமல் போனது. <br />

அதற்கெல்லாம் நாங்கள் கவலைப்படவில்லை. ஏனெனில் எங்கள் நோக்கம் மிக உயரியது. எங்களைப் பொருத்தவரையில், எங்கள் தொழில் வெற்றிகரமாகத்தான் இருந்தது. உலகத்தைப் பொருத்தவரையில் அது தோல்வி. கல்வியில் நாங்கள் செய்ய விரும்பிய மாற்றத்தை அளவிட முடியாது என்பதை உணர்ந்தோம். மாணவர்களுக்கு மதிப்பெண்களையும் ரேங்க்குகளையும் விற்பனை செய்யும் மற்றொரு நிறுவனமாக நாங்கள் விரும்பவில்லை. அடுத்த கட்டத்திற்குச் சென்றோம். <br />
<br />
<u><b>தொழில் முனைவும் பணமும்</b></u><br />
<br />
தொழில் முனைவு என்பது ஒரு வாழ்க்கை வழி. நீங்கள் ஒரு தொழில் முனைவோராகலாம் அல்லது பணியாளராகலாம். ஒன்று நீங்கள் உங்களது விதியை நீங்களே உருவாக்க வேண்டும் அல்லது உங்கள் முதலாளி சொல்படி நடக்க வேண்டும்,<br />
<br />
நீங்கள் ஒரு ஆரம்ப நிறுவனமாக இருந்து, உங்கள் நிறுவனத்தில் முதலீடு செய்பவர்கள் நீங்கள் பின்பற்ற வேண்டிய விதிகளை நிர்ணயித்தால், பிறகு நீங்கள் உங்கள் தொழில்முனைவின் ஆன்மாவை இழந்து விடுவீர்கள். <br />

உங்கள் கனவு நிறுவனத்தை தொடங்குவதைக் காட்டிலும் பணம்தான் முக்கியம் என்றால், நீங்கள் இன்னும் வழக்கமான போட்டி உலகில்தான் இருக்கிறீர்கள் என்று அர்த்தம். கார்ப்பரேட் பணியில் அந்தப் போட்டி பதவி உயர்வு, வருடாந்திர சம்பள உயர்வு என்று இருக்கும். தொழிலில் பணம் தேடும் போட்டியும் அப்படித்தான். வாழும் முறையில் என்ன மாற்றம் இருக்கிறது?<br />
<br />
வாழ்க்கை மற்றும் வர்த்தகத்தின் அத்தியாவசியமான பங்கு பணம். ஆனால் நீங்கள் அந்தப் போட்டியில் இருந்து வெளியே வர வேண்டியிருக்கிறது. முதலில் வந்தால் என்ன? பந்தயத்தில் கலந்து கொள்ளும் எலி எலிதானே. <br />
<br />
இந்தப் போட்டியில் பங்கேற்கக் கூடாது என்பதில் நான் தீர்மானமாக இருந்தேன். ஆரம்பத் தொழில்களோடுதான் இன்னும் நான் பணியாற்றிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். வாழ்க்கையை நன்கு அனுபவிக்கிறேன்.<br />

<u><b>கொடுக்கும் கலாச்சாரத்தைக் கடைப்பிடியுங்கள்</b></u><br />

“எந்த ஒரு எதிர்பார்ப்பும் இல்லாமல் இந்த உலகிற்குக் கொடுப்பதை வழக்கமாக வைத்திருங்கள். பிரபஞ்சம் உங்களைக் கவனித்துக் கொள்ளும்.” எனது வழிகாட்டிகளிடமிருந்து நான் கற்றுக் கொண்டது இதுதான்.<br />
<br />
எதிர்பார்ப்பில்லாமல் செய்யும் சேவையின் ஆற்றலை நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டும் அரவிந்த் ஐ கேர் மற்றும் சர்வீஸ் ஸ்பேஸ் போன்ற நிறுவனங்கள் வெற்றிகரமான நிறுவனங்கள்தானே.<br />
<br />
இந்த விஷயத்தில் நான் குழந்தைதான். இப்போதுதான் தத்திதத்தி நடக்கிறேன். கொடுக்கும் கலாச்சாரத்தை பழகிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். அன்கர்மா.இன் புராஜக்ட்டில் பங்களிக்கிறேன். உலகை சிறந்த வசிப்பிடமாய் மாற்ற முயற்சிக்கும் அனைத்து விதமான புராஜக்டுகளுக்கும், உன்கர்மா.இன் மூலம் நாங்கள் கருத்துரு எழுதும் பணியை மேற்கொள்கிறோம். விலை அட்டையைத் தொங்க விடுவதை விட்டு பரிசுப் பொருளாதாரத்தின் அடிப்படையில் கருத்துருக்களை எழுதுவது என்று முடிவு செய்தோம். <br />

ஆரோக்கியமான உணவு, தூக்கம் மற்றும் தியானம்<br />
<br />
என் வாழ்க்கையில் உணவு பற்றியும் தூக்கம் பற்றியும் நான் கவலைப்பட்டதே இல்லை. நான் ஒரு உணவுப் பிரியன். நீண்ட தூக்கத்தை நேசிக்கிறவன். எப்போதாவது தியானம் செய்வேன். <br />
<br />
இப்போதும் அதையேதான் செய்கிறேன். ஆனால் இப்போது விழிப்புணர்வோடு செய்கிறேன். தங்களது உணவு மற்றும் வாழ்க்கைப் பாணி குறித்து மிகுந்த விழிப்புணர்வோடு இருக்கும் மனிதர்கள் மத்தியில் வசித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேன். பாஸ்ட் புட், சர்க்கரை மற்றும் பாக்கெட்டில் அடைத்த உணவுப் பொருட்கள் உட்கொள்வதை இப்போதெல்லாம் மக்கள் விரும்புவதில்லை. இயற்கை உணவை நோக்கி பெரும்பாலானோர் திரும்பி வருகின்றனர். வெல்லம், தேன் என்ற இயற்கை இனிப்புக்கும் புத்துணர்ச்சி மிக்க உணவுக்கும் அவர்கள் மாறி வருகின்றனர். <br />
<br />
அதிகாலையில் எழுந்து கொள்ளும் பழக்கம் எப்போதும் எனக்கு இருந்ததில்லை. ஆனால் தொழிலில் இறங்கியதற்குப் பிறகு அது எனது வாழ்க்கைப் பாணியையே மாற்றி விட்டது. இப்போது, இரவு ஒன்பது மணிக்கெல்லாம் படுத்து காலையில் விரைவாக எழுந்து கொள்கிறேன் (இரவில் சீக்கிரம் படுப்பதற்குக் காரணம் அப்போதுதான் ஒரு எட்டுமணி நேரமாவது தூங்க முடியும்). தியானத்தைப் பொருத்தவரையில் இப்போதும் முறையாக செய்வதில்லை. ஆனால் முடிந்த வரையில் அதை முறைப்படுத்த முயற்சிக்கிறேன். சரிவிகித உணவு, தூக்கம் மற்றும் தியானம் இவை மூன்றும் இருந்தால் நீங்கள் ஆரோக்கியமாகவும் உயிர்த்துடிப்புடனும் இருக்கலாம். <br />

<u><b>மகனுக்கு மாற்றுக் கல்வி</b></u><br />
<br />
வழக்கமான பள்ளிக் கூடங்களுக்கு தங்கள் குழந்தைகளை அனுப்பாத பெற்றோர்கள் சிலரைப் பார்த்த பிறகு, கல்வி குறித்த புதிய பார்வை எனக்குள் விரிந்தது. குழந்தைகளுக்கு புத்தகங்கள் மற்றும் பரிட்சை போன்ற சுமைகள் இல்லாத இயங்கு முறை பற்றி கனவுதான் கண்டு கொண்டிருந்தேன். <br />
<br />
எங்கள் வட இந்தியர்களைக் காட்டிலும் தென்னிந்தியர்களும் வெளிநாட்டவர்களும் இந்த பள்ளி இல்லா கல்வி குறித்து அதிக விழிப்புணர்வு பெற்றிருக்கின்றனர். <br />
<br />
கற்றலுக்கு முதன்மையானது கற்பவர் தேர்வு அடிப்படையிலான கல்வி என்ற கோட்பாட்டை வலியுறுத்தும் ஒரு கல்வி முறைதான் பள்ளி இல்லாக் கல்வி முறை – விக்கிபீடியா. <br />
<br />
பள்ளியில் இருந்து எனது மகனை நிறுத்தி விடத் தீர்மானித்தேன். சண்டிகரில் உள்ள கோவேதா (coVeda) என்ற ஒரு பள்ளி பற்றி எனக்குத் தெரியவந்தது. இது பள்ளி இல்லாத மற்றும் ஒருங்கிணைந்த கல்வி அடிப்படையிலான பள்ளி. குழந்தைகளைப் பள்ளிக்கு அனுப்பாத பெற்றோர்கள் கூட்டத்தில் நானும் ஒருவனாகச் சேர்ந்தது எனக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியாக இருந்தது. <br />
<br />
40 % நேரம் பணம் சம்பாதிக்க! 60% நேரம் சுய தேடலுக்கு!<br />
<br />
எனது தொழில்களில் நான் தோற்றுப் போகாமல், இந்த கருத்தை நான் கற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கவே முடியாது. என்னை மேம்படுத்திக் கொள்ள அதிக நேரத்தைச் செலவு செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் பணத்திற்காக அலையும் (தேவைக்கு அதிகமாகத் தேடுதல்) நேரத்தை ஒரு எல்லைக்குள் வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்றும் எனது வழிகாட்டி எனக்கு ஆலோசனை சொன்னார்.<br />
<br />
<br />
நான் எனக்காக வேலை செய்தேன். எனது வேலை நேரத்தில் 40 சதவீதத்தில் முடியக் கூடிய வேலைகளைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து செய்தேன். வாழ்வதற்கு ஏற்ற பணத்தை சம்பாதிக்கிறோமா என்பதை மட்டும் உறுதிப் படுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டியிருந்தது அவ்வளவுதான். மற்ற நேரம் முழுவதும் படிப்பு, கற்றுக் கொள்வது, எனக்கு மன நிறைவைத் தரும் எழுத்து (சில நேரங்களில் அதற்கும் பணம் கிடைக்கிறது) என்று செலவு செய்கிறேன். <br />
<br />
<u><b>சிறு ஓய்வு</b></u><br />
<br />
வாழ்நாள் முழுவதற்கும் பணத்தைச் சேர்த்து வைத்து விட்டு ஒரு பணக்காரனாகச் சாக வேண்டும் என்ற கருத்தை நான் ஏற்றுக் கொள்வதில்லை. உங்கள் பொருளாதார வாழ்க்கையை திட்டமிட வேண்டும்தான். உங்கள் சம்பாத்தியம் நின்று போனதற்குப் பிறகு உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை நடத்துவதற்குத் தேவையான பணத்தை சேமித்து வைக்க வேண்டும்தான். ஆனால் அதற்காக உங்கள் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் நீங்கள் ஒரு எந்திரம் போல இருக்க வேண்டும் என அர்த்தமில்லை. காலை 9 மணியில் இருந்து மாலை 6 மணி வரை… சாரி.. காலை 9 மணியில் இருந்து இரவு 9 மணி வரை வேலை பார்க்கிறீர்கள். ஆனால் வாழ்க்கையை அனுபவிப்பதில்லை. <br />
<br />
“நிகழ்காலத்தில் துன்பப்பட்டு எதிர்காலத்திற்கு சேமித்து வைப்பது வயோதிக காலத்தில் அனுபவிக்க காமத்தை சேமித்து வைப்பதைப் போன்றது”<br />
<br />
இதற்கு மாற்றாக நமது மொத்த வாழ்க்கையிலும் அவ்வப்போது சிறு ஓய்வு எடுக்க வேண்டும். முதலில் இது சாத்தியமில்லை என்றுதான் நினைத்தேன். ஆனால் அது சாத்தியம்தான். நினைத்துப் பார்த்து சந்தோஷப்படுவதற்கான சம்பவங்கள் உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் பத்துக்கும் குறைவாக இருக்குமானால், உங்கள் வாழ்க்கையின் நோக்கம் பற்றி நீங்கள் மறு பரிசீலனை செய்தாக வேண்டும். <br />
<br />
ஆண்டுக்கொருமுறை சிறு ஒய்வு எடுப்பது பற்றித் திட்டமிடுங்கள். ஓய்வு என்றால் நீங்கள் வேலை செய்யாமல் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று அர்த்தமில்லை. நீங்கள் விரும்பும் போது வேலை பார்க்கலாம் என்று அர்த்தம். <br />
<br />
எனது முதல் சிறு ஓய்வு கோவாவில் கழிந்தது. ஒரு மாதம் விடுமுறை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு கோவாவில் கழித்தேன். நேரம் கிடைத்த போது வேலை பார்த்தேன். முழுமையாக அனுபவித்தேன். <br />
<br />
<u><b>விழிப்புணர்வுடன் கூடிய வாழ்க்கை</b></u><br />
<br />
இதன் மூலம் நாம் அறிய வேண்டிய பாடம் என்னவெனில் விழிப்புணர்வுடன் வாழுங்கள் என்பதுதான். ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்தையும் நீங்கள் பொறுப்புணர்வோடு செய்ய வேண்டும். ஆரோக்கியமான உணவு சாப்பிடுங்கள், குப்பைகளை போடாதீர்கள், உங்கள் சுற்றுப் புறத்தை ஆரோக்கியமாக வைத்துக் கொள்ளுங்கள் என்று யாரும் உங்களுக்கு அறிவுரை சொல்லத் தேவை இல்லை. சிறிய அளவு விழிப்புணர்வு இருந்தால் போதும். அதுவே உங்கள் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கையிலும் வர்த்தக உலகிலும் நேர்மையை கொண்டு வந்து சேர்க்கும். உங்களைச் சுற்றியிருப்பவர்களை நேசிப்பீர்கள். பதிலுக்கு அவர்கள் உங்களை நேசிப்பார்கள். </div>

Romesh Sobti is an obedient son of an army officer, he 
enrolled for an engineering course in deference to his father’s wish. 
But after completing that, he opted for a career in banking, a choice 
that surprised many. After 35 years of dealing with intricacies of debit
 and credit, the astute banker now leads a promising new generation 
bank. Sobti was a very bright young man with a lot of energy, commitment
 and understanding.</div>

The long winding career path, which began at 
State Bank of India in early 70s, wounds its way through multinational 
biggies like Standard Chartered Bank and ABN AMRO, before Sobti took 
over the reins at IndusIand in 2008.</div>

<strong>Early days and Education</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He
 completed his Bachelors Degree (Honours) in Electrical Engineering and 
has also done his diploma in Corporate Laws and Practice and Secretarial
 Practice. As per his father’s wish, he would be a doctor or an 
engineer, so he became an engineer. But from engineering at least he had
 the freedom to go into banking, he didn’t stay in engineering even for a
 day. So that choice was his and the academic career choice was 
father’s.</div>

If not banker he would have been a literature professor.
 Sobti is very fond follower of English literature probably because his 
father is an MA in English literature and he left all his books around, 
which Sobti read growing up through school and college. He did his 
masters while he was in service and was an army officer. He recalls that
 at the time of his generation, by and large parents decided what you 
would be.</div>

 Bank of India.  His last assignment has been with ABN Amro Bank as 
Executive Vice President - Country Executive, India and Head, UAE & 
Subcontinent. His responsibilities included consumer and commercial 
businesses in India, Pakistan and UAE support.</div>

<strong> Initiatives at Induslnd Bank</strong></div>

A
 large measure of the credit for its success goes to Romesh Sobti, 64, 
who took over as Managing Director and CEO in February 2008, moving from
 ABN Amro Bank which he then headed. He brought along the then top 
management team of ABN Amro as well, including Sumant Kathpalia, Suhail 
Chander, K.S. Sridhar and Ramesh Ganesan. Today, IndusInd Bank's capital
 adequacy ratio is a healthy 13.83 per cent (up from 11.91 per cent in 
March 2008) and non-performing assets (NPAs) a minuscule 0.33 per cent 
(down from 2.27 per cent six years back). Net interest margin is 3.71 
per cent as against 1.37 per cent when Sobti took over.</div>

When 
Romesh Sobti signed up to lead Hindujas' IndusInd Bank in 2008, not a 
single stock analyst thought it worth covering. Four years hence, more 
than 150 do. Goldman Sachs Group and JP Morgan have top ratings on it. 
Templeton, Vanguard and Blackstone are among stake owners. It was not 
just investors who had a dim view of the bank run by a family embroiled 
in the Bofors arms procurement scandal of the 80s, but even the 
regulator had given up hope terming it an 'outlier'.</div>

Turning 
around the fortunes of a bank with four-month average liabilities versus
 four-year assets was, of course, a Herculean task for Sobti. Sobti, the
 son of an army officer, had done no extraordinary banking in his 
33-year career. It didn't include billion-dollar deals or trading exotic
 derivatives.</div>

Having worked in all the three spaces of banking 
(the public sector, private sector and the multinational) you really 
begin to appreciate where the three perspectives really come from. He 
got very solid and most valuable grounding at State bank of India where 
he worked earlier. Grass root banking, working in the rural areas that 
give you an appreciation of the fact that development banking is 
essential.</div>

<strong>Action plan to restructure Induslnd bank</strong></div>

Sobti’s
 action plan includes restructuring of the balance sheet and 
re-talenting the bank. He believes that, we cannot have the best product
 and services – if you don’t have good quality people. So, re-talenting 
the bank was our first point of arrival. Finally, re-infrastructuring 
the bank...it means technology, infrastructure, premises, processes, 
operations, compliance audit that you do.</div>

In April 2011, IndusInd 
Bank also bought Deutsche Bank's credit card business. Currently, 
vehicle loans are down to 21 per cent of the total loan portfolio - 16 
per cent on commercial vehicles, and five per cent car loans. In all, 
retail loans, much more diversified than before, comprise 45 per cent of
 the portfolio, corporate loans making up the rest. The latter is 
carefully diversified between large, mid-sized and small industries at 
29 per cent, 17 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively. Sectors such as 
power, food and beverages, gems and jewellery and real estate have three
 per cent exposure each.</div>

Thus IndusInd is one of the few banks 
where customers can choose the denomination of notes they get while 
withdrawing money at an ATM. It has introduced 'cash on mobile', which 
enables people to withdraw the money transferred to them without a debit
 card, by simply keying in a PIN number received over their mobiles. It 
has a 'quick redeem' scheme which allows credit card users to instantly 
redeem their points after making a purchase. It was the first to 
introduce video banking by which a customer can view bank officials 
while speaking to them. The effort is paying off - IndusInd Bank now has
 five million customers, getting 50,000 to 55,000 new ones a month 
against 4,000 to 5,000 five years ago.</div>

<strong>Family</strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sobti
 is married and he has two children: a son and a daughter. His wife is a
 homemaker, his son is now 31 years old and he is not a banker. He is 
averse that he will never do this sort of management thing. He is a 
Masters in telecom engineering. He is pursuing his course of action in 
life according to the way he thinks he should go about it. The father 
has a very little influence except that the father has funded him in his
 studies. Sobti’s daughter is also similarly well educated, but she is 
into child education. So both the children are now in a way independent.</div>

He
 feels that work-life balance can be achieved by really doing things, 
which you do passionately. So even if you are sitting at home working on
 certain things, you do it passionately. Time well spent creates the 
balance because you spent your time well whether it’s at home or at 
bank. You are balanced.</div>
