Men and women who spoke out against the outrageous and dictatorial power of the Church or the emperor were subject to some of the most horrific torture ever devised by humanity. They were sometimes left with broken bones and humiliation which would result in death. Scold’s Bridle A scold’s bridle sometimes called a brank’s bridle or simply branks, was an instrument of punishment used primarily on women, as a form of torture and public humiliation. The device was an iron muzzle in an iron framework that enclosed the head. A 2 to 3 inches crub was attached to it. The curb-plate was frequently studded with spikes, so that if the offender moved her tongue, it inflicted pain and made speaking impossible. Wives who were seen as witches, shrews, and scolds, were forced to wear the branks locked onto their head. Tongue Tearer The Tongue Tearer as the name suggests was used to cut off the tongue of a person. A Tongue Tearer looked like an extra-large pair of scissors. It was used to cut off the tongue of the victim without any effort. The mouth of the victim would first be forced open using a device called a mouth opener. After that, the tongue tearer was used to grip the tongue of the person and then it was cut off using this instrument. Lead Sprinkler The Lead Sprinkler was used to inflict huge pain on their victims. The device was usually filled with molten lead, though other liquids such as tar, boiling oil, water, etc., were also used, at high temperature, which could severely scald skin. This device was used on the body parts of the victim such as the stomach that would be very painful. Many times it was used on the eyes of the person that will result in blindness. The instrument was also used with molten Silver to give the harshest effects. Knee Splitter The knee splitter was a form of torture used mainly during the inquisition. It’s said that this device was a uniquely German device, first recorded in 1530;also going by the names Kranz or Schneiden. It was created from two spiked wood blocks, placed in front of, and behind the knee. The blocks were connected with two large screws. When turned, the blocks would close towards each other, destroying the knee underneath them. This would result in permanent damage of knees and would make the person cripple for life. Thumb Screw The thumbscrew was first used in medieval Europe in the 1600s. It is a simple vice, sometimes with protruding studs on the interior surfaces. The victim’s thumbs or fingers were placed in the vice and slowly crushed. The thumbscrew was also applied to crush prisoners’ big toes. Some also have spikes on them which would make the pain unbearable. Surprisingly, some women used it to straighten and elongate fingers to make them look elegant. The heretic’s fork The heretic’s fork was a torture device, loosely consisting of a length of metal with two opposed bi-pronged “forks” as well as an attached belt or strap. It went round the victim’s neck, with one fork pointed to the chin, and the other to the sternum, while the victim remained suspended. The device prevented sleep, because, the prongs would pierce their throat and chest if the head dropped. This was used as a torture device that would make great for interrogation. The Scavenger’s Daughter The Scavenger’s daughter was a type of torture device invented in the reign of King Henry VIII of England. However, extant documents reveal that the device was rarely used. It was, however, extensively used by Queen Elizabeth I to punish the Protestants accused of treason. The victim had to sit on one-half of it, with the other half crushing him further into an involuntary rigid crouch, as the screw would tighten the hinge in the middle. This would eventually crack the victim’s ribs and breastbone and dislocate the spine. It also caused heavy bleeding. Rack/Horse/Strappado The Rack was primarily used in Europe and was extensively used to torture and came in many forms. Basically, the victim would be tied down, as a mechanical device, tightened the rope to dislocate the joints, often long enough to tear the limbs off. In the case of a Horse, the victim was to the top of a beam. It was also used in countries like Palestine. They also tied heavy weights to the victims body to dislocate joints. Pear of Anguish Pears of Anguish were metal tools, mainly for women. Different kinds were inserted into the vagina of a woman, or the mouth or throat of the person being tortured. Shaped like a pear, the device had four ‘leaves’ which were operated by a screw at the top. Once it was inserted then the screw was opened. As the leaves of the pear open up, it stretches the wall of the vagina and then it would eventually tear the muscles and gives permanent damage. It was for crimes such as abortion, witchery, miscarriage, homosexuality, adultery, blasphemy, lies, etc. The Judas Cradle Judas Cradle was a torture device, not designed to kill, but to inflict pain and humiliation. With a steel collar attached to the victim’s waist, a pyramid-shaped tool would be impaled into his intently stretched orifice. The pressure caused excessive pain. The torturer could lift the victim with rope and pulley system and lower him again, driving the penetrative part deeper into the victim. Torture sessions lasted for days. Also, the device was rarely washed, causing life-threatening infections. Also, the device was rarely washed, causing life-threatening infections.
